Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

Dreadful Day Ever

It all started with my case of terrible hair. I couldn't do it to look decent. As I was running out the door, I fell and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely running behind for work.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
